ODW is happy to share the following open datasets called “starter packs” for encouraging community participation in identifying tools and technologies that could be useful for research and exploring digitized content, including newspaper content.
This is an approach pioneered by the BnL Open Data project from the National Library of Luxembourg, part of the BnL strategy to participate in Luxembourg’s “open data” economy. The results have been remarkable, for example, a senior economist at PricewaterhouseCoopers has used the data to explore food prices in the 1870s.
We invite you to download the following files to explore other tools and development opportunities for digital collections.
The included files are chosen for being in the Public Domain based on Canadian Copyright laws and to offer a variety of simple and complex objects for testing. Accompanying XML records and record sets (.txt files) include the most salient data about/from the items as outlined in the starter package lists.
“Zip Files for Tile Delivery” Lightening Talk
November 14, 2024 Art Rhyno presented “Zip Files for Tile Delivery” at the IIIF Online Meeting
One alternative to running an Image Server in an IIIF implementation is to serve static tiles from Zip files using Byte Ranges. This reduces the overhead of storing and managing thousands of pre-cut tiles and uses long-standing web plumbing for efficient network delivery. The impetus for this project has been to reduce expenses by identifying affordable web storage for large collections of scanned newspaper images and leveraging inexpensive container computing for a discovery layer. This lightning talk describes the process of setting up such an environment and how the approach can help lower the entry costs for getting newspaper collections online.
